Ortlieb Pannier Racks – Which One Is Right for Your Bike?
Whether you're commuting to work, heading off on a cycling holiday or simply need somewhere to carry your shopping, Ortlieb offers a range of rear pannier racks to suit different bikes and riding styles.
The five main options – Rack Three, Quick-Rack, Quick-Rack Light, Quick-Rack L and Quick-Rack XL – all provide practical luggage-carrying solutions, but there are some important differences in their design, weight, mounting systems and compatibility.
The biggest decision is whether you want a traditional, permanently fitted rack or one that can be quickly removed when it's not needed.

1. Ortlieb Rack Three
Best for: Long-distance touring and carrying heavier loads
The Rack Three is the traditional option in the range, designed to remain permanently attached to your bike. Its sturdy aluminium construction supports up to 30kg, making it ideal for fully loaded touring, commuting and everyday transport.
A particular advantage is its double-rail design, allowing panniers to sit lower while leaving the upper platform free for a rack bag or basket. It also features integrated mounting points for Ortlieb QL3 and QL3.1 panniers, making it especially versatile.
Designed for 26" and 28" wheels, with tyres up to 55mm wide.
2. Ortlieb Quick-Rack
Best for: Everyday cycling, commuting and occasional touring
The original Quick-Rack offers much of the practicality of a traditional pannier rack, but with the convenience of rapid removal. Once the initial fittings are installed, the rack can be attached in around 15 seconds and removed in just 5 seconds.
With a 20kg carrying capacity, two pannier mounting levels and a useful upper platform for additional luggage, it's an excellent all-round choice for riders who want to alternate between a lightweight bike and a fully equipped commuter or touring setup.
Suitable for tyres up to 29" × 2.35" with direct mounting, subject to fitting compatibility.
3. Ortlieb Quick-Rack Light
Best for: Lightweight bikepacking, gravel riding and road cycling
Weighing just 440g, the Quick-Rack Light is the lightest rack in the range. It retains the same quick-release convenience and impressive 20kg carrying capacity as the original Quick-Rack, but dispenses with the upper luggage platform to save weight.
This makes it particularly appealing to riders who only need a pair of rear panniers and want to keep their bike as light and uncluttered as possible.
Ideal for gravel and road bikes, particularly where weight is a priority. It accommodates tyres up to 29" × 2.35" with suitable direct mounting.
4. Ortlieb Quick-Rack L
Best for: Gravel bikes and touring bikes with thru-axles
The Quick-Rack L takes the versatility of the original Quick-Rack and adds greater tyre clearance, making it particularly suitable for modern gravel and touring bikes.
Its design is optimised for mounting using Ortlieb's optional Thru Axle M6-Connector, allowing it to fit many bikes that might otherwise struggle to accommodate a conventional pannier rack.
It retains the useful upper luggage platform, double-rail arrangement and 20kg load capacity. With direct mounting it accommodates tyres up to 29" × 3.0", or 28" × 50mm with the thru-axle connector.
5. Ortlieb Quick-Rack XL
Best for: Mountain bikes, e-bikes and carrying more luggage
The Quick-Rack XL is the most substantial model in the removable range, offering a higher 26kg load capacity and additional clearance for wider mountain bike tyres.
Featuring stronger 12mm support tubes and the familiar quick-release mounting system, it is particularly well suited to mountain bikes, e-bikes and adventure bikes that require a robust, removable luggage carrier.
It accommodates tyres up to 29" × 3.0" when directly mounted, or 29" × 2.6" with the optional Thru Axle M6-Connector.
Which Ortlieb rack should you choose?
For a dedicated touring bike that's regularly carrying heavy loads, the Rack Three is an excellent choice, particularly if you prefer a conventional, permanently fitted rack.
If you want one bike for commuting, weekend rides and occasional touring, the Quick-Rack is probably the most versatile choice. The Quick-Rack Light is better suited to riders prioritising low weight who only need side panniers.
For modern gravel and touring bikes with thru-axles or wider tyres, the Quick-Rack L provides additional fitting options and clearance. Meanwhile, the Quick-Rack XL is the natural choice for many mountain bikes and e-bikes, especially when carrying larger or heavier loads.
A note about compatibility
Before choosing a rack, it's important to check your bike's wheel and tyre size, mounting points and axle type. The Quick-Rack range offers several mounting options, including direct frame mounting, optional seat stay adapters and Ortlieb's Thru Axle M6-Connector, although compatibility and tyre clearance vary between models.
Also consider which luggage you intend to carry. All four Quick-Racks support side panniers, but the Quick-Rack Light does not have an upper platform for a rack-top bag or basket. None of these racks should be used to carry a child seat.
