Gerry Charnley Round: This route was devised in 1984 by friends of the late Gerry Charnley in recognition of the unique contribution that he made to pursuits involving strenuous exercise in the hills.
Gerry was an outdoor pursuits training officer at the police training centre near Preston, Lancashire when he fell to his death from Swirral Edge, Hellvelyn on December 14th 1982 after a cornice collapsed beneath him whilst leading a party of cadets. He was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Fell Runners Association in 1969, was co-founder and chief organiser of the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon (now the OMM) and was the first secretary of the Lake District Mountain Trial Association.
However, it is in memory of his role in introducing the sport of orienteering to England that members of the South Ribble Orienteering Club, the club he helped to set up in 1964, and England's first, have worked with HARVEY to update and reprint this map.
